Integrating Interpersonal Neurobiology into Financial Planning:
Practical Applications to Facilitate Well-Being
You’re good at the doing parts—you’ve got all the training. You’ve got tools and protocols and checklists. Everything’s branded and looks great. But what about your inner toolbox?
From Deep Listening to pausing to skillfully responding when someone is emotional to regulating your nervous system when you’re starting to react to a client or their story . . . skills of being are what make you who you are as a human advisor. A calm port in a storm, a grounded guide during times of adversity, and someone who understands, first-hand, how to cultivate resilience and well-being because you put your oxygen mask on first.
No matter how good robos get in the next 20 years, they’re not going to be able to be that.
I created Mindfulness for Financial Advisors to introduce Mindfulness as a Way of Being to people whose concerns are usually around doing. The class is for busy professionals who aren't going to prioritize the time necessary for Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR), and who want mindfulness packaged in a way that connects it to their work in a practical way. It's science-based, as MBSR has been studied for decades, plus 2020's award-winning FPA paper showed that mindfulness promotes insight, connection, and more skillful advisor-client interaction.
Put whatever you think you know about yourself and everyone else aside, prioritize the time, and sharpen your skills at . . . being . . . human.

Many of us would never bother to pay much attention to meditation except that you custom-designed this course for us. Since we do tend to carry a lot of stress around, and knowing how debilitating it can be, not only for us personally but also for our relationships with our clients, I am very grateful to have had the opportunity to learn and practice with you. I learned things that I wouldn’t have ever known otherwise. I am sure you can use me as an example of someone who was a complete mess at the beginning but who now exhibits calmness and pause in how I am living and communicating.

The personal and emotional side of money is what matters more to me now....

Attending Dr. Mary Martin's mindfulness classes for advisors is like discovering a treasure chest of rare jewels: no two are the same, and they have offered me many opportunities for wonder and "aha" moments. The presentation style is a good blend of guided practice, teaching, as well as breakaway sessions to apply "being in the moment", listening, and communication skills. These sessions have transformed my own self-development journey and coaching relationships with clients. I highly recommend them.
